White Glibettes, “Kloub Kraa,” grilled and salted pumpkin seeds, supposed to have medicinal qualities (anti-cholesterol). These were sold out of baskets by itinerant merchants who used a small tea cup known as a “Kass trabelsi” as a measuring tool. Today Glibettes are imported from Turkey and have become extremely expensive.

Later came black Glibettes (“Koub Kahia.” Sunflower seeds originally sold by weight and that continue today to be a popular snack together with the famous chickpeas, “Homs,” and peanuts “Kakoula.”

Neither sunflower seeds nor peanuts are expensive, and can keep a person satisfied for an entire evening. As a result, sellers can be found everywhere in town, and some fans have even talked of forming a seed lovers’ club.

Something to think about.
