Keftagi

is a delicacy made with hot peppers, tomatoes, and fried eggs to which small pieces of potato are sometimes added. In Tunis zucchini are also incorporated, but the most famous Keftagi remain those found in Kairouan..

Keftaji

Former sellers/makers of Kaftagi :

  • gueddahARROUM (near Barrouta, next to Hjamine). Here one could buy “keftaji bdourou” for five millimes. He was an extremely generous and gentle man who would frequently give free samples of his wares for free to small school children without embarrassing them. That sort of sensitivity is no longer to be found. Unfortunately, M Arroum is no longer with us.
  • Med Salah KHERIBI (deceased; the boss of Med ZAIDI, nicknamed Tantass, who with Boudissa and Gueddah (Bab el Kedda) are still the most famous keftaji in Kairouan
  • His son, Sayedf KHERIBI is struggling to revive the fame of his father
  • Ali JALEGH (in the Rahba – deceased)
  • The JERIDI brothers : Othman, Hassen, and Abdelhamid (in the Rahba)
  • Hedili LOGHMARI (in the Rahba)
  • Hedi GAALOUL (Blaghija)

And right around the corner from the Café Amor on Soukeina bent al Houcine street, there was in the 1960s ten other excellent keftajis, among them :

  • KHALSA (deceased)
  • Med BEN FREJ (deceased) and Hedi EL AYEB EL BENBLI
  • Salah DHOUIBI (deceased)
