According to legend, Kairouanese carpets were first introduced by Kamla, Mohamed Chaouch's daugher. Chaouch was a governor of Ottoman origin. His daughter is said to have spent two years weaving that first carpet, finding inspiration in the carpets of her father's home, and subsequently donating it to the city mausoleum.
(The carpet said to have been woven by Kamla in XIX.)
