abi zamaa balaouiThis mausoleum contains the grave of the famous Abu Zamaa El Balaoui (Abu Zamaa Ubayd Ibn El Arquam El Balaoui who was killed in 654A.D.). He was a Companion (and disciple) of prophet Mohamed, Peace be on Him (he kept three hairs from the prophet’s beard).

The Muradite Bey Hamouda Pacha (1631-1665A.D) built the Mausoleum, the dome and the courtyard. Mohamed Murad Bey built the Minaret and the Medersa (Coranic School).

This pleasant and magnificent architectural monument is one of the most frequently visited sites in Tunisia. Many visitors come from the Arabian Maghreb for blessing.

abi zamaa balaouiIt is a unique place not only for Moslems passing by Kairouan, but also for foreign tourists who visit Tunisia. In short, it plays a considerable socio-cultural role.

People come to get together, to make wishes, to celebrate marriage contracts or circumcisions. Also, every year, the Mouled (birth of Prophet Mohamed) celebration is held at the Mausoleum.
