| Kairouan is known for being the city of the three hundred mosques
In her book “The Mosques of Kairouan“ published recently, the Syrian Dr. Engineer Najoua Othman has enumerated exactly 106. We are mentioning here only the most ancient and well-known mosques. These in general still carry the name of their founders :

French colonial period :
During the colonial period there was only one mosque that was constructed by indigenous Tunisians outside the Ramparts of the old city. This Mosque was named the Negra Mosque (nearby Bab Jelladine). It was built at the same time as the primary school Al Fath and Al Aminia. Funds were collected from private donors in particular from Hadj Sghair NEGRA (1939) who was the president of the Carpet Traders Corporation of Kairouan and the President of the carpet fair.
