HUNTING TOURISM

chasseHunting goes back to antiquity in Tunisia. Researchers from the University of Kairouan have found out hunting scenes through rock paintings in the Ouesslatia caves dating back to ca.5,000 years ago (Neolithic era).

scene de chasseMosaics exhibited in the National Bardo Museum (Tunis) dating back to Roman Tunisia shows the importance of hunting in the Roman society which had several functions: meat supply; crops, cattle, and poultry-yard protection; quest for skins and furs.
It can also have a social role and be considered as a leisure activity.

In the Governorate (Province) of Kairouan, the wild boar; and the hare (jack rabbit) are considered the most hunted animals before wild birds (ducks, woodcocks, partridge, thrushes, starlings, ruails and turtle-doves).

The hunting season starts towards end September through end November. In other words, it begins at a time when animals have reached the full growth period during which egg laying occurs in March following a mating phase that could last many weeks.

lièvreThe hare is an animal sought for its flesh. Its hunting is much appreciated as it considered very entertaining. It is practiced according to two techniques: on foot with a net, or with dogs. It is mainly consumed in town and is thus a matter of an important trade with the countryside.
